Eravikulam National park

The Eravikulam National park was a hunting preserve of the British in once upon a time.  To protect the endangered mountain goat and the Nilgiri tahr it was declared as a sanctuary in 1975.  It has become a national park in the year 1978.  The high rolling plateau is the main body of this national park.

This park was spread out along the crest of the Western Ghats in the high ranges of the Idukki.  Idukki is one of the districts of Kerala.  This national park is the abode of other little known fauna such as the Nilgiri marten, ruddy mongoose, small clawed otter and dusky striped squirrel.
More than 120 species of birds are here.  100 species of butterflies are also here.  Eravikulam National park is also famous for the spectacular mass flowering of the shrub neelakurunji. It blooms in the garlands every twelve years only.
