Saraswathi Mahal Library

The Thanjavur Maharaja Serforji’s Saraswathi Mahal Library is one of the most famous medieval libraries in the world.  The survey of Encyclopedia Britannica mentions this library as “the most remarkable Library in India.”  This library was conceived and christened as the Royal Palace Library in the 16th century by the Naick Kings and it was later developed by the Maratha Kings of Thanjavur. 

It was built during the time of 1700AD.  This Library contains 30,000 volumes in Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and some of the European Languages also.  These languages are focused in varieties of subjects.  They are science, Medicine, Engineering, Astronomy, painting and dancing.

The volumes are mostly written in the palm leaves and paper manuscripts.  It contains very rare and valuable collections of books, maps and paintings on all the aspects of Art, culture and literature.  After the year of 1918 this Library became a public Library.  Now, this Saraswathi Library is being maintained by both the government of Tamil Nadu and India.
