Ooty Information

Ooty is also called as Udhagamandalam and it is the “Queen of all the Hill Stations.”  It is the popular hill station in India.  Ooty is situated on the Nilgiris.  It is a blue mountain range at an altitude of 7500 feet above the sea level.  Udhagamandalam is the headquarters of the Nilgiris district where the ghats of two ranges meet. << Ooty More Information >>

The entire plateau is full of splendid green down and the lofty hills of extraordinary scenic beauty.  Nilgiri hills presents us a truly breath taking kaleidoscopic view which gives ‘Soul stirring’ experience.

Ooty has two quieter hill stations.  They are ‘Coonoor’ and ‘Kothagiri’.  We can feel a salubrious climate which is similar to the English summer.  Coonoor is about 17km and Kothagiri is about 31km from Udhagamandalam.

Ooty Lake

‘Ooty Lake’ is very proud because of its ‘Blue Hills’.  The lake is about 1.5km from the station.  It is in the central position and gives strategic attraction to the visitors.  It is an ideal place for boating.  The Boat House here includes a ‘Children’s corner’ also.  The entire lake was used for fishing as a major activity in the earlier period.  The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation took the Possession of the lake for the pleasure of boating facilities on the behalf of the Tourism department in year 1973.

Doddabetta

Doddabetta is about 10km from ooty bus stand.  It is the highest peak in the Nilgiris which is about 2634 meters.  The name Doddabetta literally means ‘big mountain’ which is so in reality.  It lies at the junction of Western and Eastern Ghats. << Ooty More Information >>

It offers a beautiful visit and gives pleasure to our eyes.  This Nilgiri Hill ranges are surrounded by dense Forests.  We can have a magnificent view of the landscape here.  Through the telescope we can see the whole district.

Coonoor

Coonoor is about 17km from Udhagamandalam.  It is situated at an altitude of 5600 feet.  This is the first of all the hill stations.  The visitors are mostly attracted by the Sim’s park.  This park has luxuriance of shady trees   which is a pleasant place.

The quieter well maintained botanical garden has several varieties of plants.  They are not to be found in other hill stations.  There are exciting walks for hikers. << Ooty More Information >>

Experiments in fruit growing are done here at the Pomological station.  The famous Pasteur institute here makes anti-polio vaccine and they have done research for rabies.

Some Picnic spots around Coonoor

Loz falls is about 2.5km, Lamb’s Rock is about 9km, Ralling Dam 11km, Ketti Valley 8km, Dolphin’s Nose  and St. Catherine falls are very  important to visit. << Ooty More Information >>

Kothagiri

Kothagiri is about 26km from Ooty.  It is also a quieter hill resort of the Nilgiri hills.  A Course for Golf is also here.

Dolphin’s Nose

Dolphin’s Nose is situated about 12km from Coonoor which is very nearer to the Tiger Hill.  It lies in the midst of dense shades and criss crossed by a winding road.  We can get a wonderful view of the Catherine falls from this place. << Ooty More Information >>

Pykara Lake and Water falls

Pykara is about 21km from the Ooty Mysore road.  It has a well protected fenced shoal, toda settlement with undisturbed grassy meadows and also a good wildlife habitat.  The reservoirs, waterfalls and the Boat house of this Pykaradam attract many tourists. << Ooty More Information >>

Kodanadu View Point

Kodanadu is about 18km from Kotagiri on the eastern edges of the Nilgiris.  We can see the fantastic and panoramic view of the tea estates on the either side of the road.  The beautiful view of the river Moyar is breath taking.  A watchtower is there to view the Rangaswami peak and pillar.  Buses are available frequently from here. << Ooty More Information >>

The ooty races held during the April, May, June months attracts thousands of tourists and race goers every year.

Palaces

There are some palaces in ooty.  They are Aranmore Palace (ie) Thamizhagam, Mysore palace, Baroda Palace, The cedars which is the palace of the Nizam of Hyderabad and Nawanagar Palace.  We can visit these palaces with permission only.

Peaks

Ooty nestles in a high valley which is surrounded by high peaks like Doddabetta.  It is about 8,640 feet and it is the tallest peak in Tamil Nadu. << Ooty More Information >>

Industries

Ooty has lot of tea processing factories.  There are some plants to distill eucalyptus oil, geranium oil, lemon-grass oil and camphor oil.  The purification and honey collection are done here.  Photographic items under the trade name “Indu” are manufactured by Hindustan Photo film co.

Willington

It is about 16km from ooty.  It is located on the mountain rail route.  A military Academy is situated here. << Ooty More Information >>

Power Houses

Moyar hydo-electric station is about 40km, Kundah power houses are about 32km and 48km from here & Pykara power houses which is about 23km.  The Head works are singara and Glen Morgan.

Upper Bhavani Dam

This dam can be visited with the permission from the Divisional Electrical Engineer.  It belongs to the kundah power station & kundah Bridge of the Nilgiris District.

How to Reach

Airway

Coimbatore airport is the nearest one to Ooty.  It is about 100km.  The ways are connected to Chennai, Mumbai and Bangalore. << Ooty More Information >>
